Terraforming Mars Tableau Game Board VideoTerraforming Mars Playthrough Review
These aspects are not represented by a global parameter, but usually result in a higher TR for the player, as indicated on the specific cards.
This is your basic income and VPs. You increase it every time you terraform. No other tiles may be placed there. As the temperature rises, carbon dioxide will thaw out, adding a greenhouse warming effect as indicated by the heat production bonuses.
The game board has an accurate map of the Tharsis region of Mars, including Valles Marineris and 3 of the 4 great volcanos. Only the region around Olympus Mons is missing.
The areas reserved for Ocean tiles are low in elevation so water will naturally flow there. The plant bonuses around the equator simulate that the higher average temperature will make it easier for life to thrive there.
Mountain ridges have steel and titanium bonuses, while other interesting sites may have a card draw bonus, like the Viking site where the first man-made lander touched down.
The game board has a map where tiles may be placed. When placing a tile, you must first check to see if there are any placement restrictions.
There are areas reserved for the ocean and specific cities, where no other tiles may be placed. Furthermore, each tile may have specific restrictions printed on the respective card or in the summaries below.
When you place the tile, you receive the placement bonus printed on that area if any. You also get a bonus for placing tiles next to ocean tiles see below.
Ocean tiles may only be placed on areas reserved for the ocean see map. Placing an ocean tile increases your TR 1 step. Ocean tiles are not owned by any player.
If possible, greenery tiles must be placed next to another tile that you own. If you have no available area next to your tiles, or if you have no tile at all, you may place the greenery tile on any available area.
Place a player marker on it to mark your ownership. When placing a greenery tile, you increase the oxygen level, if possible, and also your TR. If you can't raise the oxygen level you don't get the increase in TR either.
Greenery tiles are worth 1 VP at the end of the game, and also provide 1 VP to any adjacent city see below. May not be placed next to another city exception: Noctis city must always be placed on its reserved area.
Add a player marker. Each city tile is worth 1 VP for each adjacent greenery tile regardless of owner at the end of the game. Note: the card Capital places the unique Capital city tile, which counts and scores like a normal city tile, but additionally gives you VPs for adjacent ocean tiles, as stated on the card.
Some cards allow you to place special tiles. Any function or placement restriction is described on the card. Place the tile, and place a player marker on it.
Resource cubes: Resources are collected on the player board or on specific cards. There are many types of resources, but they are all marked by these cubes:.
Player markers: Each player uses his own color to mark TR, ownership of tiles, production, and to indicate the used blue card actions.
Temperature, oxygen, and generation markers: Start at the beginning of the respective track. First player marker: Shifts clockwise each generation.
The player board keeps track of your current resources and production. Resource cubes are placed in their respective boxes, and player markers are used on the production tracks.
In the game, resource icons refer to resource cubes, while resource icons inside brown boxes refer to the production of that resource see the project card below.
Production is not limited to Example: If you play a card that increases your heat production 3 steps from 19 to 22 you mark this by having 2 player markers on '10' and 1 marker on '2' on the production track above the heat box.
All leftover energy is converted into heat at the beginning of the production phase. The game in itself is not bad, but the quality of the components is poor to say at least.
We have games that were considerably cheaper, with more elements and all of them at the highest quality. First of all, I want to tell everyone that I received the original version.
The one I have is not a fake or copy. I contacted Stronghold Games before placing the order, and they mentioned that they have a "transparency sticker" on the Terraforming Mars sold by Amazon Canada.
I wasn't sure what to expect. Today I received the game and on the plastic seal of the box there is a small sticker which you can scan with the Transparency App to confirm the authenticity.
It gave me all the details, including the fact that this box was produced in Germany. This was a big relive as I had read reviews about fake copies from China going around.
The game is not easy -- the manual is 15 pages. However, I think it's a good challenge which will make the game even more interesting I purchased it after recommendations from several friends.
The cardboard material feels lighter than I would expect, but at the end there is so much material in the box of Terraforming Mars, that the entire box was heavy.
Very heavy. Heavier than my other board games. So it makes sense to me that some of the material is lighter, otherwise this won't be a nice box to grab and move when you wish to play it.
Graphics on cardboard items and cards are excellent. As someone has mentioned, the cards are quite thin not too thin, mind me, but thinner than other board games.
However, once again, there are over cards. Those are two quite tall piles of cards already. Heaving them heavier or thicker may have not helped the enjoyment of the game.
The cubes. All the cubes have a cut-mark in one of the corners, I assume due to the fabrication process. The semi-transparent cubes are very similar to the cubes from Pandemic.
In these semi-transparent cubes the cut is barely visible. Additionally, in my set there is only one cube one blue cube which has an air bubble in it.
The small metallic copper cubes are good. The small metallic silver cubes look "fair", but it seems that grinding on each other some metallic cover is coming off from them.
The big metallic gold cubes are good but not perfect. One has some little dots barely noticeable tho. Some seem a bit more orange-gold and others more yellow-gold.
Others seems to shift the color in the cube between those two. But once again, barely noticeable unless you have OCD and a focused attention to details.
Overall I am happy about this game, and I am looking forward to spending the next days at home playing it. The copy I received was a counterfeit copy.
I'm not sure if all of Amazon's are, but its definitely something to be cautious about. From what I understand the easiest way to tell is that the production quality overall is down cards seem especially flimsy and the board doesn't fold quite properly and the player boards will be held with a piece of cardboard instead of plastic wrap when you first open it.
Having said that, having played the game before, it is one of the best games I've played and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Little bit complicated at first with a lot going on but after a few playthroughs it starts to make sense. More items to explore.

While many of the better cards need certain conditions to be met before they can be played: you may need to have played a certain amount of cards with a specific symbol into your tableau, or need the game to have reached or not passed a certain point to be valid — for example, the temperature may need to have reached a certain level.
While the game has a variable end time, all paths lead to Rome: most things you do are pushing the game towards its conclusion, so games tend to last a similar amount of turns and ramp-up significantly, and satisfyingly, as the game reaches its climax.
But multiple paths to victory and different starting corporation powers for each player means every game feels significantly different. These are me, plus three fictitious players drawn from observing my friends and their respective quirks and play styles.
Not that I have a load of experience with them, but Terraforming Mars has quickly become my favourite solo board game experience.
The big challenge the solo game offers is trying to get all three of the paths completed in a very limited amount of turns.
At first this seems impossible, but the speed at which you can get things done really ramps up as the game goes on — making for a great narrative arc.
And two often linked problems more often than not rise to the surface. First is the luck inherent in the random card draws — second is game length.
